Welcome from Dean Mahesh Daas
Perched high above Lawrence on Mount Oread, our school not only occupies a unique place on the University of Kansas campus, but in the intellectual landscapes of architecture, design, and planning as well.
KU's mascot, the Jayhawk, is a symbol of what inspires us. The original Jayhawkers were pioneers who came to the Kansas Territory just prior to the Civil War. They were courageous champions of the anti-slavery movement so passionate that Kansas enter the Union as a free state that many lost their lives fighting for the cause.
Today's Jayhawks embody that pioneering spirit. We belong to a sky that has no limits, and we work hard to bring our hands, hearts, and minds together to engage the world. The School of Architecture, Design & Planning's own tradition of excellence dates back more than a hundred years, an extension of the progressive spirit of the Jayhawkers who founded the University in 1865. Our Jayhawks have high-altitude vision and yet can still swoop down to seize upon the tiniest opportunity.
Our faculty are thought-leaders who take risks as they engage the world, exploring the frontiers of knowledge with one thing in mind: to provide our students with the design, leadership, and planning skills they will need to build healthy, sustainable communities, and make discoveries that will change the world. The three departments in our school—Architecture, Design, and Urban Planning—represent three very different perspectives on the world we live in, and yet having them in one school gives us many opportunities to learn from each other in an interdisciplinary manner.
The University of Kansas is the only institution in our great State that is a member of the prestigious Association of American Universities, a group of 62 elite public and private research universities. AAU members “are on the leading edge of innovation, scholarship, and solutions that contribute to the nation's economy, security, and well-being.”
As you visit our websites, allow me to say we would love for you to become part of our great legacy as students, partners, alumni, donors, and visitors. Please follow me on Twitter @deandaas to learn more about all the exciting activities of the School here at KU and around the globe.
